The Centre for Perinatal Health Services Research was established in 1996 to bring together the perinatal health service research and education efforts of a number of groups with responsibility for perinatal health services research in New South Wales.

The Centre for Perinatal Health Services Research undertakes research relevant to clinical policy and practice. Identification of clinical problems is facilitated by it being the research partner of the NSW Pregnancy and Newborn Services Network, a multidisciplinary organisation of clinicians striving to provide the best care for high risk pregnant women and newborn infants. This partnership is also important for research implementation in clinical practice.
The aims and objectives of the Centre for Perinatal Health Services Research are:
  • Analysing population based perinatal data to establish rates of perinatal morbidity and mortality and their associated risk factors.
  • Identifying preventable perinatal conditions that adversely affect long term developmental disorders in children.
  • Promoting and conducting randomised controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of maternal and neonatal care.
  • Critically appraising evidence for the effectiveness and efficiency of various forms of maternal and neonatal care as part of the Cochrane Collaboration
  • Facilitating and evaluating the implementation of research findings into clinical practice.
